The painting, Terrace in Martha's Vineyard, combines the rich textures of the architecture with the exquisite colors of rose bushes lining the pathway to the home.  The influence of the French Impressionists and Claude Monet's garden shine through in this masterpiece.  Cooper's interplay of light and shadow leads us to the bright sunlit terrace and invites us to knock on the door, hoping to be welcomed inside.

With his extensive art background, Cooper became an instructor of watercolor and architectural rendering at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia from 1895 to 1897.  Inspired by Childe Hassam (1859-1935), whom he met in New York beginning in the 1890s, Cooper was credited in 1902 with being the first artist to capture the aesthetic beauty of what were then the modern skyscrapers.  The work titled Fifth Avenue New York was purchased by the French government in 1906 for the Luxembourg Museum, a great honor for an American painter.

Cooper had visited California during the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, where he received a silver and a gold medal.  These were two of many such awards he earned during his lifetime.  In 1921, Cooper relocated to Santa Barbara, California.  There he continued his illustrious painting career and became Dean of Painting at the Santa Barbara Community School of Arts.  This versatile and amazing artist continued to produce many wonderful paintings throughout the rest of his life.  Colin Campbell Cooper earned an international reputation and is considered to be a major American painter on both the East and West coasts.
