A Native Californian, Guy Rose was born in San Gabriel, CA on March 3, 1867.  Being from a prominent family, he attended Los Angeles High School and later moved to San Francisco to begin his art training at the School of Design under Virgil Williams (1830-1866) and Emil Carlsen (1853-1932).  In 1888, Rose further studied in Paris under Constant, Lefebvre, and Doucet at Academie Julian.  In 1894, he received an honorable mention at the Paris Salon, and was the first Californian to receive an award from this prestigious institution.

One of the finest Impressionist painters of California, Rose insisted on painting outdoors, to capture the true effect of natural light.  The delicate, fresh quality of the brushwork, the multitude of small bits of color that cover the surface of the painting and the diffused, natural light on an overcast day show the influence of the French Impressionists.  In the Musée Gardens is a prime example of using diffused light while capturing the essence of the subject.  This masterful work was painted ca. 1912, in Tours, France, and was eventually shipped back to California where it was exhibited at Stendahl Art Gallery in 1922.  An accompanying catalogue was produced for this now famous exhibition/sale and In the Musée Gardens was written by Earl Stendahl: The foliage of trees largely obscures the twin towers of the Tours Cathedral.  Moss, because of the continual rain, is seen growing on the balustrade and tree trunks.  The sky is composed of a subtle gray mist.  The building in the foreground is now used as a museum."
