The Distant Town is a pure impressionist masterwork by American born artist, Guy Rose. He spent the years 1904 to 1912 in France, roaming the villages and countryside to find the perfect picturesque painting locations. The hilltop vista from where The Distant Town was painted, fits this criteria perfectly. Rose was able to perfectly capture the beauty and tranquillity of this idyllic French country scene.

Guy Rose produced some of his finest paintings during his years in France. It was in Giverny that the Roses resided in a quaint little home, and it was here that they were situated in close proximity to the famous Claude Monet.

Guy Rose was associated with and certainly influenced by his good friend and painting companion, Frederick Frieseke (1874-1939). They played tennis together, dined and even shared the same models on painting excursions. Rose painted Frieseke’s wife Sarah, no fewer than three times. Rose was also close friends of artists Alson Clark (1876-1949), Richard Miller (1875-1943) and Lawton Parker (1868-1939). This entire group of talented artists did not know at the time, that they would have a profound influence on generations of artists. “The Giverny Group” would be recognized in history as some of the finest impressionist painters of the twentieth-century.
