Born in Kreuznach on the Nahe,
Germany, he became known for his brightly painted California
landscapes. After being drafted into the German army, he deserted
and fled to France and studied art at the Ecole Delecluse, the
Academie Colarossi and with DeLancey and Bouguereau. During this
time he did primarily figure painting and made a living from the
trade of book binding.
In the 1880s, he emigrated to Illinois and painted portraits in
Chicago while teaching art at a Decatur art school. Then he spent
two years in London teaching at Frank Brangwyn's school, and
returning to the United States, he taught at the Denver Art School.
In 1908, he settled for the remainder of his life, thirty-seven
years, in Pasadena, California where he built a home in the Arroyo
Seco. His studio was in the Blanchard Building in Los Angeles, and
in 1913, he founded the Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts in
Pasadena.
