Hotel Laguna
36 x 48 inches

The Redfern Gallery is proud to present a magnificent new collection of paintings created at nature’s most inspiring locations by nationally acclaimed American Impressionist Gregory Hull.

Hull is an artist who holds a prominent position in the realm of contemporary “plein air painters”. With his impressive formal education, dedication and longevity as a fine artist, Hull’s paintings are highly sought after by his collectors. He is an artist who is genuinely at home with nature, traveling to distant areas, discovering inspiring locations and capturing nature’s most magnificent examples of beauty and majesty. He continues to experiment with his own personal style and aesthetic language, using a masterly arrangement of color, form and composition.

Gregory Hull’s work is represented in numerous personal and corporate collections throughout the United States. Prominently displayed at the Kierland Westin Hotel and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona is a monumental achievement, a triptych series of paintings depicting the Grand Canyon. Another major painting by Hull is featured in The Meadows Del Mar Country Club as the resorts signature painting. He also dedicated a year to a major project for Nestle USA, creating a series of thirty paintings, which were received with tremendous acclaim. The Montage Resort and Spa in Laguna Beach prominently displays in the main lobby Owens Valley, a stunning painting of stately cottonwood trees as part of their permanent collection.

Gregory Hull is a highly talented artist who continues to excel at his chosen profession with vigor and determination. It is with great pleasure that The Redfern Gallery presents this outstanding exhibition entitled “In Search of Light”.

Henry Salem Hubbell
(1870-1949)
Tender Moment
24 x 36 inches

An artist known for his impressionist portraits, Henry Salem Hubbell’s Tender Moment is an elegant and graceful example of the distinguished work he is famous for. Born in Paola, Kansas in 1870, he began his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and began his career as a magazine illustrator in the 1890s. He went on to study at the Julien Academy in Paris with Jean Paul Laurens, Louis Collin, Benjamin Constant and James Whistler. Hubbell was one of only several students whom Whistler thought of highly and who predicted that someday “the world will know him as a colorist”. In all of Hubbell’s work, color is an outstanding characteristic.

He lived in France from 1898 to 1910 and was part of the American Colony of Impressionists at Giverny from 1908 to 1910. While there he became friends with Claude Monet and Frederick MacMonnies and taught students from Providence, R.I. at a school run by Mary Wheeler. He went on to head the School of Painting at the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1918 – 1921 and was one of the founders of the University of Miami, teaching there from 1925 – 1940s.

Along with his figural works, he also received numerous prestigious commissions for portraits including four from Franklin D. Roosevelt. His paintings were purchased by the French government, William M. Chase bought his painting “The Poet”, “Le Cocher” was purchased by E.T. Stotesbury and was presented to the Union League Club in Philadelphia. “The Samovar” was presented by Baron Rothschild to the art museum of Lille, France. His paintings are held in public and private collections in Paris, London and America.
