Angel Espoy
(1871-1963)

Rolling Surf
30 x 40 inches

Born in Villa Nueva Spain in 1879, Angel Espoy loved the sea.  He left home at eighteen and joined the Spanish Merchant Marines where he learned in great detail all the nuances of the clipper ships which he eventually included in his paintings.  Later he studied painting with the great Spanish master impressionist Joaquin Sorolla in Barcelona.  Sorolla is famous for his ability to portray the brilliant light of Valencia Beach. “Rolling Surf” by Angel Espoy displays the influence of his teacher Joaquin Sorolla. The deep blue waves are richly painted in the clear sunlight along the magnificent California coast.

Espoy’s father had tobacco interests in the Philippines and in Havana, Cuba. Espoy began painting designs on furniture in Havana prior to moving to New York City in 1904.   His travels took him back to Spain and then to San Francisco in 1914 where he made cartoons for movies and painted outdoors with Manuel Valencia, Carl Jonnevold, and John Califano. Eventually making a  living solely by the sale of his paintings Espoy moved to Southern California in 1922.  His body of work includes seascapes, maritime subjects and the rolling California hills with poppies and lupine.

Angel Espoy was a member of the Los Angeles Art Association.  He exhibited at the Madrid International Exposition in 1912 and Barker Brothers Galleries in Los Angeles in a solo show in 1934.  His works are held in the Los Angeles City Hall, the Oakland Museum, Loyola University and the Irvine Museum.
